Amigos das Crianças
In 1995 Peta's support of the children of the Santa-Casa de Misericórdia of Albufeira was formalised by setting up the ‘Amigos das Crianças’ with the then head of the Santa-Casa, Mrs Helena Serra. Funds raised by the Amigos have since helped with building repairs and improvements, clothing, bedding, dental and optician expenses, and trips and outings for both the Pirilampos young children, and Gaivota teenage children.
The Pirilampos home for young children was built in 1979 and currently houses 17 children. The home consists of a wooden house with a brick dining area and bathroom block, and another wooden pavilion. The home accepts both boys and girls so brothers and sisters can stay together. The home offers children basic living accommodation in a caring environment with regular meals of high standard. The children either go to crèche or to the local school. An educational psychologist works with the children, and the charity provides a teacher to help with their homework. The little ‘Pirilampos’ or fireflies, then move down to the ‘Gaivota’ home, situated within the Santa Casa da Misericórdia headquarters near Albufeira, when they start secondary school.
There are 40 teenagers living at Gaivota, either at school or on courses. Here they are treated as responsible young people and are expected to make their own way to local schools and are introduced to life in the town of Albufeira. Gaivota means seagull, and it is at this home that the children find their wings and learn how to live in the community, studying, working in the holidays, and even going to universtity. Those who are less academic can take practical courses run by the Santa Casa which enables them to find jobs, either within the institution, or outside of it.
